Why “Gain Followers Quick” Tips Won’t Work

There are hundreds of “get followers quick” tips on the world wide web. From apps to hashtags, you can gain as many followers as you want with the press of a button. I have two words for those of you who participate in these apps… delete them! I know what you’re thinking. “Keiana why would I do that? I’m gaining followers”! You might be gaining followers in number, but this isn’t helping you reach your ultimate goal.

The idea of having more followers is to also gain more engagements, will influence more social media users to find you and follow you! It’s a cycle. The people who follow you for who you are called organic followers. These are the people who can really help propel your brand. Let me break it down for you.

Let’s say you’re running for a student government position. You hand out free things to people and tell them to vote for you. They take the free stuff and say sure. When it comes to election day, the polls don’t reflect the actual number of people who promised you their vote. It turns out that only your friends voted for you, giving you the least amount of votes among the candidates. What did you do wrong? You took the easy way out.

Similar to these apps and quick tricks, simply asking for people to vote for you wasn’t successful. They don’t know you. They just want the free stuff. In social media world, you gave them a #Follow4Follow or #Like4Like. These go absolutely nowhere. You can have all the likes in the world and fake followers, but these will not get your social media account to where you want it to be. So how do we get thousands of organic followers that will take our brand to the next level?

For starters, it’s all in the content. Tell a consistent story with your content. People who are interested in your page will follow, like, and share as they choose. This is what will create awareness of your account. You also need to be an active participant in twitter chats and daily hashtags. This gives potential followers a chance to see you! Take advantage of this by creating content they will want to rave about on social media.
